Network Switches

A network switch is a key element of network infrastructure for reliable communication within a LAN. It is used to connect computers, servers, IP cameras, printers, and other devices where the port capacity of a standard router is no longer sufficient. Based on MAC addresses, it intelligently directs data traffic directly to the target device, thereby ensuring high throughput and transmission stability even under heavy loads.

How to Choose the Right Switch?

When choosing a switch, it depends on the scale of the network and the type of connected devices:

  • PoE switches (Power over Ethernet): They allow for simultaneous data transmission and power supply to connected devices (e.g., IP cameras, VoIP phones, or Wi-Fi APs) over a single Ethernet cable.
  • Active PoE (IEEE 802.3af/at/bt standards): Intelligently detects the power requirements of the connected device and automatically adjusts the power output.
  • Passive PoE: Delivers a constant voltage without prior communication with the device (often used in combination with PoE injectors).

Difference Between a Switch and a Router

A switch connects devices within a single local area network and expands the number of available ports. If you need to divide the network into subnets (VLANs) or connect it to the external internet, the network must be supplemented with a suitable router.
